When you rent resources and hardware for your websites or your applications, the provider is hosting your services.

Hosting can take 5 forms:

• Shared server: this is the most common solution for small applications that do not require extensive IT knowledge or for personal websites. You have to share resources with others.
• Dedicated: this is ideal for small business, as you have a dedicated hardware. It can be self-managed or managed by the provider.
• Virtual Private Server: similar to dedicated, but the hardware is virtual. It can be self-managed or managed by the provider.
• Cloud: your hardware is virtual but can scale on a distributed system. It requires extensive IT knowledge and it fits businesses that need to scale up or have a variable traffic.
• Grid hosting: your task are processed in parallel by multiple servers. It can scale like a cloud system, however resources are accessed directly and not as a service. It fits high processing application.

Note that managed hosting requires less IT knowledge, but gives less freedom to the user.

Nowadays cloud hosting is very common and it can take 3 forms:

• Infrastructure as a service (Iaas): virtualized servers, where you need to install any application server or software yourself. An examle of this is Amazon AWS.
• Platforms as a service (Paas): framework to develop software within a virtualized server. An example of this is Apprenda.
• Software as a service (Saas): subscription sofware on a virtualized server, where everything is managed by the provider. An example of this is Salesforce.
