Java Development Kit (JDK) includes the JRE and development tools.

JRE is required to run Java applications, JDK is required to develop Java applications.

You need JDK when:

• Developing and debugging applications
• There is the need of a compiler at runtime

You just need JRE when:

• Running a standalone Java application
• Running a Java application wrapped as exe
• Running an applet
• Running applications with Java Web Start
